Restoring Rotted Trim

As your home ages, you may notice exposed wood start to decay.

What Causes Wood Rot? Wood rot is a form of decay triggered by the combination of moisture and fungi (microscopic organisms). In order for fungi to set up shop, the wood must be continuously damp; fungi will not grow on dry wood.

Problem areas are often horizontal outdoor surfaces, where water can pool up and remain stagnant.

Restoring rotten wood cost less than replacing it, and can often be done in as little as 2 days and 3 easy steps!

Supplies:
-Ready Patch
-Putty Knife
-40 Grit Sandpaper
-Paint
-Paint Brush

Step One: Prepare Surface
The first thing you want to do is prepare a good surface to put your patching compound on. Often times, for minor rot you don't have to do anything.
In the above image you can see I drove a screw into the wood to close that gap.
If you have soft rot (you can push a screw driver through it) the affected areas need to be removed.
You also want to prepare the surface by brushing on an exterior wood stabilizing primer.

Step Two: Apply Patching Compound
Open your patching compound and scoop some out onto a small board, using your putty knife.
Apply the compound, don't worry about getting it perfect at this point. The first application you are just creating a good base.
Let dry for the time specified on the can.
Sand off any loose compound, and reapply.
Repeat these steps until all surfaces are flush.

Step Three: Paint
For the final step, tape off surrounding areas and paint!
You want to use 2 coats of a good outdoor paint to seal up the surface and prevent further damage.
